The little-known Arrigo Sacchi shocked the world of Italien football when he was appointed as Milan coach in the summer of 1987. He arrived with new ideas and new players like Carlo Ancelotti and the the two brilliant Dutchmen Marco van Basten and Ruud Gullit.
His revolutionary ideas took a little while to take hold, but the longer the 1987-88 season progressed the better Milan were becoming and the slowly started to rein in the lead of defending champions Napoli. The turning point came in early May when the teams met in Naples for a virtual title-decider and deservedly won 3-2 thanks to goals by van Basten and two by the veteran Pietro Paolo Virdis, setting the club up for a first title win in 9 years.
