Arminia Bielefeld 1971-72 Retro Football Shirt

Few clubs kick off a season knowing that however well play in the coming months, relegation is an absolute centainty regardless. This was the prospect that Arminia Bielefeld facing the 1971-72  season as a consequence of their involvement in the 1971 Bundesliga match-fixing scandal.

By the time the judgement was passed, it was too late to change the divisional structure, so Bielefeld were allowed to complete the following season with their record to be wiped at the end of it. With a thin squad that also was missing the suspended Waldemar Slomiany and Jürgen Neumann, Bielefeld would have finished bottom of the table anyway had the relegation places been based solely on results.
