Austria arrived at the 1990 World Cup in Italy with a talented and experienced side, hoping to build on a strong qualification  campaign and make an impression on the biggest stage.. Drawn into a difficult group alongside hosts Italy, Czechoslovakia, and the United States, the Austrians found themselves up against two of the tournaments more accomplished sides from the very start.

Narrow defeats to Italy and Czechoslovakia ended their hopes of progression before the final group match, though Austria finished on a positive note with a 2-1 win over the USA. It was a campaign that still showed flashes of quality, with players such as Toni Polster, Andreas Ogris, and goalkeeper Klaus Lindenberger among the key figures of this era.
