The 1973-74 season saw Hennes Weisweiler's thrilling Mönchengladbach side excel in cup competitions. A Bubdesliga campaign bringing a fifth-placed finish, but more memorable was the famous extra-time success in the final of the DFB-Pokalagainst Köln, the winner scored by substitute Günther Netzer in his last-ever appaerance for the club.
Mönchengladbach were just as dominant in Europe as reached a first-ever Uefa-Cup Final in style with 9 wins and 36 goals scored in their 12 matches. A 3-0 first leg defeat away at Liverpool proved too big a margin to overhaul in the return despite a stirring performance and a double by the ever-prolific Jupp Heynckes.
