Curiously the toughest fixture of the clubs 1959 Cup run was against semi-professional Tooting & Mitcham United what was the weakest team they faced. Forest progressed through the competition eliminating Grimsby Town, Birmingham City after two replays, Bolton Wanderers then Aston Vila in the semi-finals.
Their Wembly opponents were fellow Division One side Luton Townand Forest made the best possible start scoring 2 goals in the opening 14 minutes. The first came from winger Roy Dwight who had arrived at the start of the season from Fulham at considerable cost, then centre Tommy Wilson added a second soon after.
Dwights leg-break before half-time left Forest with ten men and althrough Luton pulled a goal back in the second-half, the Nottingham club held out to win the competition for the first time in 51 years and just the second time overall.
