Paulo Mantovani took over the presidency of Sampdoria in 1979 and his visionary leadership started to pay dividends this season with Samp winning promotion to Serie A following a fiver year absence.
Renzo Ullivieri's attack-minded side led the Serie B table for much of the season, though a loss in the final round of fixtures to Foggia allowed Verona to edge ahead and take the title meaning Samp had to make do with runners up position. Within a matter of weeks Roberto Mancini would sign for the club setting Samp on a path towards what would become their greatest era.
