After qualifying in the group stage against the Colombian teams, Nacional reaxhed the final with Newell's Old Boys after eliminating Universidad Catolica and America de Cali. A single goal first-leg defeat was overcome in style with an emphatic 3-0 win, the decisive goal coming from the recently returning legend Hugo De Leon.
Prolific midfielder Santiago Ostolaza was the hero in Tokyo with two goals against PSV. The match ended tied in extra time and Nacional won the Intercontinental Cup on penalties.
