1998 represented the year in which the Club Nacional de Football returned to Uruguayan national supremacy. Under the management of their former legendary defender Hugo De Leon, Nacional won both the Apertura and Clausura championships to comfortably win the the overall title. From that year on, Nacional began a cycle of dominance in the domestic environment, which resulted in countless title conquests.
